Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • 3 medium green tomatoes, firm
  • Sea salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, buttermilk or coconut milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour or gluten free flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or coconut oil
  • 1 cup marinara sauce (prepared)
  • Fresh parmesan cheese

Directions

  1. Slice tomatoes in 1/2 inch slices. Season with salt and let sit for 5 minutes on a clean work surface.

  2. Prepare 2 shallow bowls/baking dish. Whisk milk and egg into the first bowl/dish. Then combine flour, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together.

  3. Take a large sauté pan and set to a medium/high temperature. Once the pan is hot add in oil (2 tablespoons at a time as you will do this in batches).

  4. Take each tomato and dip into wet mixture then coat with flour mixture and give a little shake.

  5. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes on each side (until crispy). Place on a paper towel lined plate to drain any excess oil.

  6. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping and top with fresh parmesan cheese.
