Jake loves chicken jerky but it gets expensive. I bought 5 pounds of chicken breast for 1.99 per pound and used about 2 pounds for Jake and the rest for us. I put them in individual freezer bags. Left some in the refrigerator - it is good for a couple of weeks then the rest in the freezer to take out as needed. Jake really loves this dehydrated chicken. I do not have a dehydrator but the oven worked fine. This is what I did to make these yummy homemade treats for my wonderful dog - Jake!!
Preheat oven to 200 degrees F.
Using a poultry safe cutting board clean the chicken and pat dry. Cut off and discard any excess skin and fat.
Carefully using a sharp chefs knife hold the chicken up sideways and slice the chicken (cut along the grain - this will prevent the chicken from becoming too chewy - (not appetizing for the pup).
Slice about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch (I like it as thin as possible).
Brush both sides lightly with olive oil.
Place on a baking sheet - do not let the pieces touch each other. Bake for 2 hours and check if they are fully dehydrated and crunchy. If not it could take up to 5 hours. Check every 30 minutes to an hour until done. I have a wolf oven and it took 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Note: You can add seasonings such as garlic powder, mint or parsley. My dog loves them plain but I may experiment with seasonings next time I make these!
